Sedation Dentistry in Sacramento

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” although that term can be misleading, as with some forms of sedation, patients are awake. It’s ideal for those who have:

  • A fear or anxiety of being at the dentist
  • A bad gag reflex
  • Very sensitive teeth
  • A need for a large amount of dental work to be completed

Laughing Gas

Laughing Gas, or nitrous oxide, is one of the lightest forms of sedation dentistry designed to relieve anxiety and discomfort. It’s administered through a mask that fits over your nose, allowing you to breathe in the gas. The effects include a calming, uplifting feeling and a general sense of well-being. You will remain awake and can still communicate with our dental team, but feel more relaxed and less bothered by what’s happening around you. The effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed, making it possible for you to drive yourself home after the procedure.

Oral Conscious Sedation

For patients who experience moderate to severe anxiety, we offer oral conscious sedation. This method involves taking a prescribed dose of sedative medication about an hour before your procedure. While you remain awake during the treatment, you will feel significantly more relaxed and may not even remember much of the procedure afterward. This type of sedation requires that you have someone to drive you to and from your appointment, as the effects can take a while to wear off.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Anxiety-Free Visits: Sedation dentistry removes the barrier of fear, making it easier for you to get the dental care you need.

Comfort: Reduces discomfort during procedures, perfect for those with sensitive teeth or a low pain threshold.

Efficiency: Allows your dentist to work more efficiently as you remain calm and still, which can be particularly helpful during lengthy or complex dental treatments.

Safety: Administered by experienced professionals, sedation dentistry is safe and continuously monitored during your procedure.
